Keeping Your Finger on the Pulse: Iconic Sailing Races in the United States

The United States has a deep-rooted connection with the world of sailing, epitomized by the historic "America’s Cup," the longest-standing international trophy competition dating back to August 1851, spanning an impressive 173 years! Sailing's legacy in the U.S. continued with the founding of "US Sailing" in 1897 as the North American Yacht Racing Union, marking this year as the 125th anniversary of the union’s establishment.   


Looking beyond this historical backdrop, we set our sights on the horizon for the upcoming races that carry on the sport's legacy. Every year, a plethora of sailing races takes place, ranging from casual Wednesday night races at local clubs to the pinnacle of elite competition, such as the America’s Cup, where top sailors worldwide vie for sailing supremacy. There's an opportunity for every sailor, regardless of skill level, to partake in this exhilarating sport.   


Today, let's delve into the most iconic sailing races in the United States that every sailor should keep an eye out for!   


1. Newport to Bermuda Race (Biennial - June 21, 2024)   


The Newport to Bermuda Race, covering 636 miles, stands as one of the oldest races in the United States, founded in 1906, with 2024 marking its 53rd edition. Hosted by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, this biennial race kicks off near Newport’s Castle Hill lighthouse, offering a challenging route that spans approximately 2 to 6 days before finishing at Bermuda’s St. David’s Lighthouse. It's known for its varied conditions, including ocean currents and weather patterns. 

  

2. Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac (Annual - July 12-13, 2024)   


Celebrating its 115th year, the Chicago Mack race is a freshwater sailing competition on Lake Michigan. Over 300 sailboats participate, ranging from racers to cruisers. This 290-nautical mile race starts at the Chicago Yacht Club and culminates at Mackinac Island, offering stunning views and a unique sailing experience.  

 

3. Rolex Big Boat Series (Annual - September 11-15, 2024)   

 

Hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, the Rolex Big Boat Series celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2024. This premier regatta features competitive racing in the challenging waters of San Francisco Bay across four days, with various sailboat classes vying for the prestigious trophies.   


4. Transpacific Yacht Race (Biennial - 2025)   


The Transpacific Yacht Race, or "Transpac," embarks on its 52nd edition in 2025, covering over 2,200 nautical miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu. Known for its open ocean challenges, including wind patterns and strategic navigation, the race starts in San Pedro, Los Angeles, and finishes off the Diamond Head Lighthouse in Honolulu.   


5. New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta (June 14–16, 2024)   


Marking its 170th anniversary, the New York Yacht Club's Annual Regatta is the oldest annual sailing competition in North America. Held near Newport, Rhode Island, this regatta spans three days with buoy or navigator racing and the iconic "Around the Island" race. 

   

6. Charleston Race Week (Annual - April 18-21, 2024)   


Charleston Race Week, born in 1996, has rapidly grown, welcoming sailors of all levels to compete in dynamic conditions within Charleston Harbor. With a 20 to 30% annual growth rate, it's a fantastic event for sailors to engage with the vibrant sailing community.   


7. Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race (Annual - 2025)   


In its 118th year, the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race offers a challenging offshore journey spanning 360 nautical miles. This biennial race, known for its historic significance, navigates from Boston Yacht Club to the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, embodying the enduring spirit of ocean racing.
